Puzzles are called “Magic” when the answers read the same horizontally and vertically.
From the historical point of view, the Magic Square is the oldest known crossword game. It was discovered on a wall in Pompeii and is around 2,000 years old. There are many similar Magic Squares all over Europe, because in Ancient Rome it was usual to write something on the wall of your host.
The latest example of this era was discovered in a Roman villa in the second biggest military settlement of the Romans in the UK, “Corinium Dobunnorum”, today's Cirencester. This word game was drawn in the 3rd century AD.
