CrossWordGenius Professional 6 is available with one of five different main dictionaries:
English (UK),
English (Ireland) or
English (Australia/NZ)
English (Malta)
English (U.S.)
The words of the main dictionaries have 1 - 10 clues. The maximum number of clues per word is 495, and the maximum number of words per dictionary is only limited by the disk space. New main dictionaries are possible as well, with the limitation that CrossWordGenius Professional 6 (English) can produce English language crossword puzzles only. CWG has also a database with proverbs and quotations.
Intelligent Language Management
In order to make the management of words and clues easier, all information for the production of all types of crossword puzzles is saved in a single main dictionary.
Secondary Block
Naturally, a word is not found more than once in the same crossword puzzle. In addition to this, CrossWordGenius omits related words (see above "APPLICATION; APPLICANT; APPLICATOR"). This feature increases the quality of the crossword puzzles significantly.
Nice and Neutral Words
Usually prize game and start words are determinable. If the user wants to save time CWG can select the words automatically. The random selection of the words is not really random, but CWG uses words that are marked as "nice or neutral" only (laughing Smiley, right hand side). Words like RUBBISH are acceptable for a puzzle, but not as a start word in a codebreaker.
Puzzle Embarrassments
"Lyricist, ... Gershwin" or "Greek letter" are not very eye-catching in an Arrowword but their solutions IRA and ETA in clueless puzzles like Kriss Kross or Fill-in are really embarrassing. To prevent that, the other Smiley (left hand side) splits the whole dictionary into two - in words that don't need clues and in words that are found as clue/word combination only. Also, words that make only sense as a clue/word combination like "Capital of Ethiopia, Addis ..." ABABA are marked.
Substitution List
The Arrowword is one of the most popular types of crossword puzzle. Due to the lack of space in the small clue squares, some clues have to be abbreviated.
For crossword puzzles with clue text outside the puzzle graphic, there is no need to abbreviate. For this purpose CWG has an optional Substitution List that changes most abbreviated words to complete ones. You can also use the Substitution List for other purposes (see above).
Quotation Marks
Due to lack of space it was usual to use the short quotation marks, although the others are easier to read and they look better. In order to use the quotation marks you like, CrossWordGenius has an option in the blueprints.
All kinds of substitutions take place during the puzzle production and don't affect the dictionaries.
